The Word

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Author, C.J.  Mahaney tells us in his book "The Cross Centered Life"

"First importance.  The Bible tells us that, while there are many different callings and many different areas of  service in the kingdom of God, one transcendent truth should define our lives. One simple truth should motivate our work and impact each part of who we are.

Christ died for our sins.

If there is anything in this life that we should be passionate about, it should be the gospel.  And I do not mean only about sharing it with others.  We should be passionate in thinking about the gospel, meditating on it, being delighted in it, permitting it to transform the way we look at the world.  Only one thing should be of first importance to each one of us.  And only the gospel should be.”

John 4:8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."

  • Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins which is eternal death and separation from God and man.
  • Jesus Christ has risen from dead to prove himself to be the Son of God and that to all those who believe in Him have hope that they to will rise and live with Him forever.
  • Jesus Christ ascended to heaven and prays for all of humanity that we would repent and believe on Him and love Him the way He loves us.
  • Jesus Christ promised and will return, at the end of time, for all of us who believe and trust Him.

We do not come from the goo! We did not just slime our way into exsistence!

We were created to live in harmony, peace and in love with one and other, and with our loving heavenly Father. That’s the hope, the destiny, the truth for all who believe.

Wrath & Mercy

A Powerful Heavenly Potion

The goal of this teaching is to some how move you closer to truly loving the gospel of Jesus Christ. I believe if you can truly fall in love with the gospel your life will be more exciting, more fulfilling, more adventurous and last but not least, more sanctified!

I. What saves us?

· Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

· The power of God saves us! This truth needs to be embraced, first and foremost, God is the Almighty God! He is the greatest power! His power is awesome and terrible! God, and only God, has total dominion and authority, total power to create and/or destroy, give life and/or take life, to forgive and/or condemn. God's power is always present and evident.

· Great power is required to save a human soul. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the manifestation of that great power. The Gospel; God in the flesh, born of a virgin, given the name of Jesus Christ, demonstrated great power performing many miracles, sacrifices his perfect sinless life as payment, dies and is buried, and is finally raised from the dead by his own great power!

II. Who does the gospel save?

· Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

· Everyone who believes! Simply and clearly stated but often misunderstood or at least not fully grasped. Believing, embracing and loving the gospel releases a manifestation of Gods great power in you and you are changed.

· Romans 1:17 For in it (The Gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS MAN SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."

· You believe, and embrace the truth, the gospel. God's power is released in you and you are made righteous! You can't earn it, you can't buy it, and you aren't handsome enough, rich enough, smart enough or good enough. It's a miracle! It's the manifest power of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ and it's called, "Mercy".

· To fully understand the powerful "Mercy of God", we need to answer the next question.

III. What are we saved from?

· In Romans 1:18 Paul moves from the power of God to save believers by the gospel of Christ to the power of God to destroy the unrighteous by his wrath.

· From Romans 1:18 - 3:20, almost two chapters, Paul explains with scripture after scripture the complete depravity of the unbelieving heart and God's wrath and judgment toward the unrighteous. Why? Lets look at three reasons.

· 1. Wrong diagnoses lead to wrong treatment. If you want to find a true and lasting cure for a disease, then you need more than a basic grasp of the disease itself.

· 2. Understanding sin and wrath will make you wiser. Wiser concerning human nature - our own and others. The wiser we become, the more successful we will be battling our own sin, and helping others battle their sin.

· 3. Knowing the nature of sin and wrath will cause you to cherish the gospel. Knowing the true condition of our heart and the nature of sin and the magnitude and justice of the wrath of God, will cause you to understand and embrace the gospel, and love it, and cherish it, and the most crucial of all, it will give you the desire to share it with others.

· Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

· The key word in 1:18 is “For”, or because. Lets read 1:16-18

· For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS MAN SHALL LIVE BY FAITH." 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

· In other words; By Gods powerful mercy he saves everyone who believes on the gospel of Jesus Christ from his powerful wrath, which destroys all unrighteousness.

· God's powerful “Mercy” saves believers from His powerful “Wrath”

IV. Three Ways the Wrath of God Is Being Revealed

· In 1:17 and 18 this phrase “is being revealed”. This is in the present tense, “is being revealed”! God's righteousness in the gospel of Jesus Christ called mercy and His judgement called wrath moves hand in hand impacting humanity right now! Today the mercy of God and the Wrath of God will touch some ones life.

· How can we see the wrath of God being revealed today?

· 1. Human death is revealing the wrath of God. Romans 5:15-18 15a “For if by the one man's offense many died”; 16 “For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation”; 17 “For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one”; 18 Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment came to all men”.

· 2. Futility and misery are evidence of God's wrath. Romans 8:20-21 20 “For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope”; 21 “because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption”.

· 3. The sinking degradation of human behavior reveals the wrath of God.

Romans 1:24-28. "Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them." 26: "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions. “ 28: "And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper.

V. Wrath Mingled with Mercy.

· In the case of unbelievers or believers God mingles wrath with mercy. First lets look at unbelievers.

· Romans 2:4-5 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? (5) But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God."

· Matthew 5:45 “He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous"

· God is always warning with His wrath and wooing with His mercy.

VI. Death and Suffering and Sin in the Life of a Believer

· For the believe, death and suffering and sin are fundamentally altered by the gospel of Christ crucified in our place. The wrath and condemnation and punishment of God is transformed into His great mercy. How?

· 1. Death is a gateway into paradise. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 "O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ".

· 2. Futility and suffering are pathways to holiness. Futility is removed from suffering. Romans 8:28For those who love God and are called according to his purpose "all things work together for our good".

· 3. The power of sin is replaced with a love of righteousness. The dominion and degrading power of sin is replaced with a love of righteousness (the point of Romans 6). God does not give us over to a depraved mind, he gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit.
