CHANGING SPACES & HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - MEXICAN STYLE
You’ve probably all seen the popular home decorating show Changing
Spaces. And everyone is aware of the achievements of Habitat for
Humanity. In March we did it the Mexican way: 2 teams from the
USA, 1 church + constructing a pastor’s home, numerous local church
members, one designer (Terri) and one construction guy (“Yes we can”
Jeff). It all began by tearing down the pastor’s old home which
was attached to the back of the church. Read about the condition
of this home in our January 2007 newsletter. It was a true team
effort as both groups worked side-by-side with the members of the
church to complete this project.
The men completely framed the entire 17' x 30' house and put the
shingled roof on in one week! Scriptures were written in Spanish
on all the wooden studs. ![]() Two weeks later a group of 21 people arrived from Madison, Wisconsin, and they were like ants swarming both projects. In two days two more coats of paint were added to the inside of the church and the painting outside began and was completed in two more days. Progress on the newly tiled bathroom, which included a shower, all new fixtures, and a hot water heater continued. ![]()
The electrician arrived and the house was wired. This energetic group finished all the sheet rocking, woodworking, staining, and installation of screened windows and doors. Kitchen cabinets were built and the sink and range top installed in a tiled counter top.
Looking back, it was truly amazing what was completed in such a short amount of time - two weeks to completely construct a home and refurbish a church! Both groups brought housewarming gifts of linens, towels, dishes, glassware, silverware, cookware, fragrances, and toys to share with Pastor Jeramias, his wife Maribel and their children Isaac and Annette; as well as with the church members. It just shows what a small group of people whose hearts and minds are set on glorifying God can accomplish.
BIBLE INSTITUTE OPENS On April 6 the Earl Kellum Bible Institute in Sumidero, Veracruz officially opened. There are currently 8 students: 6 young men and 2 young women. This year long college will have an optional second year of enrollment. Terri will begin teaching Conversational English on August 6. Classes will be held twice a week on Monday and Friday. Jeff began teaching Basic Doctrine after returning from New York. He has put a new twist on the course by calling on different students to teach each lesson. No one knows when it will be their turn so everyone has to be prepared at all times! Students are learning much more than Basic Doctrine, they are learning how to prepare a teaching and relay concepts from their own lives to the doctrines they are teaching.

The group’s leader, Marv Prestrud, shared four
times in evening services and the people were greatly encouraged.
This group also generously donated a gas range top for the kitchen.

This large-hearted group also donated a refrigerator for the
kitchen! The group’s leader, Jeff King, and Kevin Peterson both
shared in evening services and a family visiting the village received
Christ as their Savior.
